Mother's Day is a celebration honouring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.
Growing up it can be difficult to grasp the full concept of a day dedicated to a father or a mother.
I once asked, ‘when is children’s day’ and the swift response has always stuck with me. ‘Everyday is children’s day’. I laughed it off, but in hindsight, perhaps this is why we should and rightly do draw such attention to Fathers and Mother’s Day.
In daily life, there is constant talk and signs of children being showered with affection and having the best provided for them. It is, from personal experience, taken for granted somewhat in that it has always been there so why is it deemed something special.
What does a mother mean to you? A mother means so many different things to each one of us, but it does deserve some thought. The traits we have witnessed and are most probably reflected in ourselves are developed over the years as our mothers’ role in our life changes.
They are the person who has natured us, cared for us, guided us, corrected us, picked us up, dropped us off, been our rock, our friend, our shoulder when required. No matter what day it is they are there when called upon.
Is it not the case therefore that every day should fathers and Mother’s Day? For now, let’s all just ensure on Sunday, March 22nd and whenever the need arises, we say thank you to the mother(s) in our lives and let them know how much they mean to us.
So, let us toast to all the mother’s around the world. Thank you, mum.
Mothering Sunday is a holiday celebrated by Christians in the United Kingdom, Ireland and some other Anglophone countries. It takes place on the 4th Sunday in Lent. It is generally observed in parishes of the Roman Catholic Church, Church of England, as well as in the rest of the UK and many Anglican parishes throughout the world, especially in Canada and Australia.
