The Lion King at The Edinburgh Playhouse
We all grew up with Disney, and to this day, the mere mention of the name “Mufassa” gives us chills. Now, we’re not – by any stretch of the imagination – fluent in Zulu. But does that stop a certain staff member belting out “aaaaaa sabenya! Salai ti baba!” into the stunned faces of their fellow karaoke enthusiasts? No. No it does not.
Though the familiarity of the film is a root cause of the show's commercial success, The Lion King firmly stands on its own four paws, lighting up the stage of The Edinburgh Playhouse Theatre. From “The Circle of Life” to “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”, this spectacular performance will have you enthralled. It continues to capture the hearts of young and old; adding additional dates to an already booming run. The seventeen-week run smashes the show’s previous record-breaking 15-week season in 2013, playing to capacity audiences’ night after night.
Unlike aforementioned amateur – though heartfelt – karaoke efforts, The Lion King’s stage performance, directed by Julie Taymor, offers a beautifully immersive experience. The costumes for the stage production have become part of the legend, transforming you straight into the heart of the Serengeti and audiences have new songs and new ways of telling Simba’s story to enjoy.
Though there are few tickets remaining – it’s ok! Hakuna Matata (it means no worries for the rest of your days… by the way). Follow the link below to AGT Tickets in order to book now:
The Lion King runs from Thursday 5th December 2019 to Saturday 18th April 2020 at The Edinburgh Playhouse – a short ten-minute walk from The Edinburgh Grand.
An amazing year for theatre
This kicks off a fantastic year of absolute bangers for theatres across the city, putting musicals centre stage. Expect the city to be awash with leg warmers and leotards, and if you’re “not that into musicals” then I suppose… you could go to the cinema or something? The rest of us will be in the theatre bars booking tickets to this year’s biggest performances. The Edinburgh Playhouse alone plans to feature The Book of Mormon, Footloose, and The Commitments before finishing with the award-winning production of Dreamgirls. If that wasn’t enough to tempt you, Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre is also gearing up for an impressive year, featuring new up and coming shows such as Six and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, as well as the much-anticipated return of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s original production of The Phantom of the Opera in September. See you in the karaoke bar?
